Temporary fix for a leaking cast iron drain pipe using JB Weld epoxy
A step-by-step guide to temporarily fixing a hole in a cast iron drain pipe using JB Weld epoxy. This solution is intended as a stopgap until a professional plumber can replace the pipe.
Locate the hole in your cast iron drain pipe and evaluate its size. For small to medium holes, JB Weld can provide a temporary seal.
Use a drain snake through a clean-out port to clear any debris or blockage from the pipe. This reduces water flow through the damaged section.
Dry the area around the hole as much as possible. Use a file to gently rough up the surface around the hole to help the epoxy adhere better.
Mix the JB Weld quick-set steel-reinforced epoxy according to package directions. Apply it firmly over the hole, pressing it into the surface to create a seal.
Let the epoxy cure for at least a few hours before exposing it to water. The package will specify exact curing times.
Turn the water back on and check for leaks. Monitor the repair regularly as this is only a temporary fix until a plumber can replace the pipe.
