Learn Fortnite building basics including walls, floors, stairs, cones, grid system, and how to build protective boxes.
A complete guide to Fortnite building basics covering the four building pieces (walls, floors, stairs, cones), the building grid system, and step-by-step instructions for building protective boxes.
Fortnite has four building pieces: walls, floors, stairs, and cones. Each serves a different defensive or offensive purpose in combat.
The building grid has three types of slots: wall slots every 5 meters along x-y axes, floor slots every 3.75 meters along z-axis, and center slots that hold either stairs or cones.
Select your building piece to see a preview, then press and hold the place button to build continuously wherever you look.
Builds place along an invisible ray from your camera. They try to place at the end of the ray but connect to existing builds if blocked. Direction is determined by your cardinal direction (45-135° = east, etc.).
Place 4 walls around you, then floors above and below, and finally cones on top and bottom to create a defensive structure.
Always spin left instead of right when placing walls to avoid misplacement, especially when not perfectly centered on a grid tile.
When perfectly between two tiles, look straight down before spinning to ensure walls place close to you.
Jump before placing the lower cone to avoid trapping yourself inside the box.
