Starting from: Threading the Needle
Learn how to sew on four-hole, two-hole, and shank buttons with step-by-step instructions. This tutorial covers everything from threading your needle to creating a strong, durable button attachment that will last.
Collect a needle, scissors, thread, and optional thimble. Any needle and scissors will work as long as the needle fits through the button holes.
Silk buttonhole twist thread is recommended for strength, but standard polyester thread works too. Double the thread for thinner options.
Cut 8 inches of thread (16 inches doubled), thread the needle, and match the ends together.
Wet the thread tip or use beeswax to help it slide through the needle eye more easily.
Start about an inch away from the button placement, slide the needle between fabric layers, and create a small stitch to secure the thread.
This creates a hidden knot that won't show on the outside of the garment.
Bring needle up through one hole, down through another, leaving space for the button to sit above fabric. Repeat 3 times per pair of holes.
Create a post by wrapping thread under the button 4-5 times for added strength.
Bring needle up through one hole, down through the other, leaving space for the button. Repeat 3-4 times.
Wrap thread under the button 4-5 times to create a post for durability.
Bring needle up through fabric, thread through shank, and back down. Repeat 3-4 times.
No post needed since the shank provides natural spacing. Bend fabric slightly to make threading easier.
Tie off thread with small stitches on the inside of the garment, then hide the end by traveling the needle through fabric layers.
Cut thread flush with fabric for a clean finish with no loose ends.
