A comprehensive beginner's guide to Fortnite covering essential UI elements, inventory management, optimal sensitivity settings, and strategic advice to help new players win more matches.
Learn to read the top-left corner showing your health, teammates' status, and elimination counts. The number in parentheses shows remaining players and teams in the game.
Watch for the timer icon (storm paused) versus pink cloud icon (storm moving). Stay on the slow side of the storm in endgames to minimize exposure. Storm damage increases: 1 DPS in phases 1-5, 2 DPS in phase 6, 5 DPS in phase 7, and 8 DPS in phase 8+.
Carry 2 weapons (shotgun + assault rifle recommended), 2 utility items (1 mobility like shockwave, 1 defense like portable fortress), and 1 health item. Avoid carrying 4-5 guns which wastes utility slots.
Lower your sensitivity significantly. Recommended: 5-10% on 800 DPI (cut in half for 1600 DPI). Most new players set sensitivity too high, causing missed shots and poor aim.
Shockwaves help escape dangerous situations and can break through walls. Port-a-forts provide crucial cover in zero build mode. Practice splitting stacks with teammates by selecting items and pressing split.
Play the dead side of zone (areas with fewer POIs and players). This keeps all enemies in front of you and prevents back-attacks. Prioritize positioning over loot in final circles.
Gold medallions grant perks like faster reload or invisibility. Boss enemies drop medallions - eliminating them grants powerful mythic weapons. Medallion teams get pushed to zone edges making them vulnerable.
