How to fix a running toilet by cleaning or replacing the flush valve seal
Learn how to fix a constantly running or trickling toilet by cleaning or replacing the flush valve seal. This simple DIY repair can save you from calling a plumber.
Use a screwdriver to lift the flush buttons. They attach to rods - lift one out and set it aside, then pull the other out with your finger.
Undo the small screw and lift out the button mechanism. Set it aside safely.
Locate the isolation valve and turn it off to stop water from filling the cistern.
Find the two clips on the side of the flush unit. Squeeze them in and lift the flush unit out of the cistern.
Check the rubber seal on the bottom of the flush unit. Look for debris, lime scale, or damage that prevents a proper seal.
Clean the seal thoroughly with water. If the seal is damaged or worn out, purchase a replacement seal from a plumbing merchant.
Run your finger around the seat where the seal sits to ensure no debris or lime scale is preventing a proper seal.
Lower the flush unit back into the hole, line up the clips, and push until they snap into place. Pull to verify it's secure.
Test both flush buttons to ensure they work correctly before replacing the lid.
Turn the isolation valve back on to fill the cistern. Check the toilet bowl to confirm the running has stopped.
